Hello Chris,
Sorry on the late reply. Busy time of the year.
With a 6:30 start time, the Starbucks in the store should be open for coffee.
As it takes less than an hour to drive to the start, I shall be leaving Hawthorne at 5:30.
As we do not have Brevet cards and control times, we will write the time we reach each control including a secret control which I'll use that Pet Lodge at that curve just before Balcom.
The back was bad last week, but so far it's been behaving. Haven't been on a bike for nearly two weeks. Hope I remember what to do. Well it'll be just like riding a bike.
BTW, that 27% grade is Los Gatos. It's the tough way to get from De Luz Rd to Clinton Keith in Murrieta. There is a Permanent that does go up it, one of John's Tough Riders. Here's the elevation profile of his 200 K.
Los Gatos is at mile 25 which looks like a line going straight up.
Gone up it once in my truck. I have never tried to go up it on a bike, came down it on a North County Cycle Club ride of which Kelly is a member. Was going to walk it along with a gal who brought walking shoes. Instead I rode the brakes. It's a mile in length.
Looks to be a beautiful weekend. Happy safe bicycling, David

Hello all,
Here is my report for the test ride.
Originally I thought this new route would have too much climbing (yes I wrote that), but it did not feel that bad. That was until my back gave up. Thank you Chris for keeping company.
Did you Chris have a record of the elevation gain on the ride.
The route directions is good except for the left on California St, mile 36.8. There is no sign and the left is on the other side of a kiosk making it less noticeable.
I would suggest a left on Oak St, and don't use Palm or I'd have gotten off the bike to walk down to Main.
Otherwise I like the route.
We parked next to your house and biked down. Java Kai is not open.
Started the ride after 6:30. Lights and reflectives will be necessary.
Not sure if it was Chris's steel bike that triggered the left turn signal on to Tierra Rejada. Imagine with all the bikes starting, someones on the circle will change the light.
Not sure if the left on 118 was triggered by bikes. I don't think it does. I think the car coming from the other side might have turned it green.
It might be nice to have a vehicle trigger the lights for the riders.
The Moorpark ridge is a beautiful route as oppose to 118. Except for a truck that honked at us. Chris was getting a horticultural lesson on the ride.
As for a secret control, I like 'What's written below the Balcom Canyon Pet Lodge?' It's can't miss as it's on a climb, on Balcom Canyon where the road bends to the left. Also there's the sound of barking dogs.
The time is 0735.
I suppose there should be another secret control on Berylwood section. You could ask riders to follow the white arrows on the ground till the right on 118.
Here's an idea.
On the Brevet Card, put in three Secret Control slots. The first one you have the above question. Tell the riders that the other two could be found on the ride.
Might add on the route slip to be careful on Wells Rd for cars getting on and off the Freeway.
There is no NEC of Wells and Foothill as it is a T intersection.
Time is 0835.
Though it is marked on the road, Foothill has some nasty cracks along the edge. Might warn riders.
A suggested water and restroom stop at Arroyo Park.
Poli St pass Catalina is rough. Riders take care.
Control #3, Corner Market time is 1016. Water faucet next to entrance.
There's water at the firestation on Casistas Pass.
I imagine it's no problem, but there is a drainage grate in the shoulder coming down before the firestation. In the past this was not here. Not till this year did I notice it.
Some rough sections coming down hill.
As I wrote before, ate a Worker Bee Cafe in Carpinteria. It's on Linden. pass Carpinteria Ave, a couple stores beyond the coffee shop.
It's a small place, the service was very good and the food was filling. I had biscuit and gravy and hash browns, excellent Randonneuring diet. The table next to our had two pancakes must have been 12 inches across. They were big. And the place is decorated with bee stuff, really cute. Chris has to play with the bobblehead bee next to our table.
There is lots of places to eat. When I ride the Coastal Cruise, I'll have to try another place.
Time is 1136.
The route to Ventura has been used plenty of times.
Stay on the bike path though Emma Wood rather than the road to Main as there is a close barrier.
Might warn of the hazards on Harbor, pass California where the asphalt is uplifted. Then further down in Oxnard where tree's roots have made the road bumpy.
We did not stop for anything for Control #5. Due to my bad back, I am unable to get off the bike.
Did fill up with water at the drinking fountain at the building outside the base near the theatre.
Time is 1420.
Control #6 time is 1452. Answer is Gate #3.
We finish at 1624.
I suspect a few riders will be riding slower and will be needing lights.
Hope this helps.
Have a terrific 200 K.
Merry Christmas to all and happy safe bicycling, David
Hello again,
Thought I would write a preview of the upcoming event. If acceptable, you may wish to eidt, post or perhaps not.
O come, all ye Randonneurs
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye, O come ye to Moorpark
Merry Christmas and happy bicycling.
Twas the night before the Brevet
and all through the garage
Randonners were preparing
for their bicycling barrage
Old tires are replaced
and so too are the brakes
In preparation for a series
that's going to be better than great
Feel that SouCal chill in the air. Must be down in the cold 60 degrees. Feels like a bike ride.
In less than two weeks, the PCH Randonneur's new season begins.
Oh the weather outside is frightful
But riding my bike is delightful
And since sitting inside just blows
Let's roll! Let's roll! Let's roll!
January 2, 2010 brings the first ride. A new route for the 200 K. As I've ridden various 200 Km Brevets, I think this is my favorite.
It is good introductory Randonneuring route, yet still has some challenges.
Wheels will be spinning, I'm glad to be outside
Oh, what a beginning, to go for a ride
My baby's here
I have no fear
As I complete my first Brevet of the year
As I learn my bicycling on rural roads and now ride the busy city streets, it is a pleasure to be pedaling out in the country again.
The route starts by taking you through the beautiful back roads. If you like animals, you can look for horses, goats and alpacas. We even had a dog chase us up the hill till Chris stop her with a shot from his water bottle.
There is a terrific vista of the harbor and the Channel Islands. On the ride there are many great views to take in.
Take your time to observe and enjoy. Especially for those possible Secret Controls. Scratch that, probable Secret Controls. Let's make that be on the look out for Secret Controls.
Here comes a Secret Control
Here comes a Secret Control
Write down what it is
I didn't miss out as I stayed on route
And I'm glad that I did
Some will be crying 'cause they were trying
To find a shortcut somewhere
I will smile enjoying each and every mile
As I saw the Secret Control that was there
Another pleasure from the ride is the many luscious aromas.
If you love strawberries, let's just say shortcake and homemade preserve went through my mind.
As this is Agricultural area, the scents of fresh produce fills the air, along with the scent of manure, but to some that is a good smell.
Rural roads, country roads
Smells like salad in the city
See the greens, before they're placed in polypropylene
Soon they will be in your store
Take care and watch for hazards on the roads. As most of the riders are experienced riding in a group, will call out obstacles.
A few head ups from what I can recall.
As Moorpark Ridge is back country, there are rough section. The big plus is there is not much in the way of traffic, but be aware of fast moving trucks.
Foothill as these cracks along the edge which has been marked in yellow from another ride. Be wary of them as you gaze across, looking at the ocean.
Poli is rough through the residential section.
As you dive bomb Casitas Pass, watch out for roughness in the road.
Along Harbor, there are various places with bumps. The first will be on the dwonhill by the pier, which I believe is circled in yellow.
If there are trees planted in the sidewalk, there will be roots uplifting the asphalt.
Watch out for drainage grates, especially on the 101 and off/on ramps.
I am sure no one will hit it, but there is a grate on Casitas Pass on the downhill before the fire station.
As you leave Emma Wood, stay on the bike path till Main as the gate is closed on the road.
Dashing through the street
on a freewheeling 18 speed
Hope you don't happen to meet
A pothole you did not see
Since this is a Rando event
Speed is not important
What is is that you make it
safely to the end.
There are many reasons why I like Randonneuring.
There's all the wonderful, friendly people you ride with which is the main reason.
There's the terrific routes, the challenges and the scenery.
And there is food.
As I Randonneur as 'a cheap bicycle tour', not only do I like to savor the ride, I want to eat.
So here is my recommendation for lunch. It is where Chris and I ate.
Food was filling, service was very good. I had biscuit and gravy with hash browns, idea long distance bicycling breakfast.
The negative side is that it is a small cafe. You will have to lean your bike against the wall, out in public. There is a small bike stall in front of the coffee shop next door, but not in view.
There are many eating establishments which I plan to partake on the Malibu Coastal Cruise Permanenet.
It's beginning to look a lot like Randonneuring
Because every where I go
The scent of pastry shop, makes me want to stop
Cause I would not want to leave without knowing what I'm missing.
I apologize for the length of this. As some of you know, my post can go on and on.
Everybody have a wonderful ride. Be safe and enjoy.
Hit the road with brand new tires
Fa la la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be an ultra rider
Fa la la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Rolling through roads straight and narrow
Fa la la la la la, la la la la
See the blazing sun before us,
Fa la la la la la, la la la la.
Hope we get done without a sore ass
Fa la la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la la la la, la la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la la, la la la la.
"Merry Christmas to all
and to all a Great Ride".

Hello Greg and Lisa,
I heard that the 200 Km Brevet was a great success. On today's club ride, Mel Cutler has praises about the ride.
Unfortunately, I was not able to do the New Year's Day Permanenet. My back has been keeping me off the bike. I did ride the club's Century as the last rider to finish.
Chris Hanson was on the ride and if he wanted to do the Permanent, I would have given it a try. Rode with him along PCH, then he took off with the faster riders. I poked along with a slower rider and we took 10 hours to complete a flat century.
I've had x-rays and going to see a specialist to find out what my problem is.
In the meantime, I got this half marathon I've paid for this coming Sunday. I'm debating on doing it. Last Sunday, I paid for the Borrego Springs Century and did not go. I laid on the floor watching movies all day.
I plan to try the Malibu Permanent next month as to keep my streak of 200 Ks alive. I will inform you which day before the ride.
Happy new year, David
