And here is my first Century of the new year.
January 1
126 miles
Pacific Coast Highway Randonneur's Anacapa 200 Km Brevet
Subject: The New Year's Day 200 K Brevet was OK
K. Was thinking this must be a fraternity ride.
It’s about time there is a Randonneuring event on a day that I can
participate. I’ve paid for that Borrego Springs Century, but why ride
with strangers I do not know when I can ride farther with those
stranger that I do know.
But that could not have been a true 200 Km Brevet. The weather is too
nice. How can it be a 200 if there is no rain. Who am I to write
that when Sunday I am hightailing it home due to a little sprinkle.
As Kelly told me when I told him I will not ride in unfavorable
conditions that I am no Randonneur.
But I am a Randonneur. I wore the RUSA reflective sash and belt along
with their ankle bands. I carry a pen and ask for receipts.
And a Randonneur always have lots of fun. Someone on the ride told me
that I am enjoying the ride too much. I believe no one has more fun
than me. Would have had more had I been able to stretch it out the
remaining hour. If only there were more homes displaying Christmas
lights.
One of the pleasures of a Brevet is this great route. Besides the
lights of Moorpark, there were plenty to see along the way. A few of
the sights on the ride were the back roads of Somis, Lake Casitas,
Ojai Bike Trail, Nicole’s diamond ring, and the Pacific Ocean.
As a man on a mission saw Junipero Serra on my venture through
Ventura.
A Randonneuring event gives me the excuse to indulge in dining guilty
pleasures. Where else would I get to enjoying pink Snowball with my
pink lemonade and a heart shaped pink sugar cookie with passion ice
tea. I know they call it controls, not rest and stop.
Where was Chris? We could have eaten at the wonderful Worker Bee
Café. They make these really big pancakes and the biscuit and gravy
makes for delicious cycling fuel. I follow the SLOBC motto, "We Ride
to Eat, We Eat to Ride” Actually I’m more the former than the latter.
The thing I most miss from not being able to participate in these
events are the fine and wonderful people. They have come from all over
including Arizona and Utah. There is a father and son team and
husband and wife tandem. There were guys and a gal who ride these low
to the ground bikes pedaling like they are sunbathing at the beach.
Gosh if I rode in that position, I’d fall asleep.
A few personal notes.
Side note 1, Shai: It is 42 X 16, I counted the teeth.
Side note 2, Ron, Matthew: No I did not disappear because of the
Canadian.
Side note 3, Bruce, Dana: I am weird.
Side note 4, Let’s all work together to come up with a new info
question for Control #6. A few that I’ve come up with. What is the
shrub next to the wall? How many slits on the drainage plate going
across the road? How many words can you make from the letters in
MUGU?
And let me also thank the Jones for putting on the ride, allowing me
to get in on this party and opening their home to a bunch of sweaty
smelly bicyclists. And Peter for checking up on us and offering
refreshments. He must have had to peek in every eating establishment
to find us all.
It seems most of the riders are planning on attending that grand gala
in France in August. From what I’ve witness, they are all well on
their way there.
Bonne chance et bon voyage
Happy safe bicycling, David
BTW, I finished an hour sooner than last year which means either I’m
getting a lot faster or I’m not as efficient at wasting time. You
give me 13 ½ hours...
