The full OC Pendleton 200Km RideWithGPS using the I-5 bypass (not going through the Camp Pendleton base proper) is here:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29113597  At mile 77.3 there are several establishments near the intersection, including Del Taco, Mobil, Denny’s and Chevron.  The RideWithGPS file does not extend to any of these, only the intersection.  There are dozens of places to eat within ½ mile of this intersection if you are so inclined to spend more time.

Subject: OC Pendleton 200Km Tomorrow!

Yes, time has flown, and the OC Pendleton 200Km is tomorrow!  A few important notes:

It’s generally cold, like near freezing in Santiago Canyon in the morning.  I recommend a light windbreaker jacket and full fingered gloves.  It will warm up to around 60F for the afternoon though.  Unfortunately, strong Santa Ana winds are forecasted in the afternoon, not so much at the coast, but definitely heading inland.  Not to worry, if you have a major problem, I’ll be around to rescue riders all day.

If you have not applied for your Camp Pendleton DBIDS Recreational Bicycle Pass, then you will have to use the I-5 shoulder to ride to Oceanside for control #3.  I’ve ridden this way many times and it’s actually faster than riding through Camp Pendleton, just very noisy!   The bypass route is here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29111566  I’ve also added the detour to the route sheet (attached), and I will have printed copied at the start.

Because of the mess with how doing the waivers online got printed, signed (or not signed), starting with 2019 all riders will sign a one page waiver at the start.  Thus you will sign the waiver, hand me the ride fee (cash or check made out to CIBC), and I hand you a brevet card.

to Willie,
Thanks again for organizing the new years ride, Willie. Next time please turn down the giant fans you placed at Santiago Canyon :D

Congratulations to all participants!
Cheers to epic rides in 2019!

Special shoutout to Peter and David. It was good riding the whole route with you. The winds and the flat tire became more bearable with you as company.

I'll be flying back to the Philippines this weekend. Awesome memories from this ride.

Sharing some photos below:

Hello Rod, Attached is a photo from the start of the ride. I being the oldest thus the wisest, stayed next to the truck out of the wind. Due to the winds, this is the poorest turnout for this ride. As I've ridden it every year, I have to ride. And it must have been the winds, this is the least amount of riders I've seen on PCH on New Year's Day. Strange, you only have to work half the time as the wind will blow you along the other half, just make sure it's the return half. David
