LAW Kick Off Century - 01/01/2020 (Orange County Pendleton 200K)

It's a new year and a new you but the same model
Time to firm and get in form but not from a bottle
Join the club's rides and shed that Winter weight
Better start it now before it gets too late
A long ride a week should be plenty
So your health like your vision will be twenty twenty

Thank you very much Willie.  My waiver and fee is coming to you in the mail.  David

I can put your Brevet card on my front porch, so you don’t have to wake me up at 4:30AM! ðŸ˜Š

Attached is the new route sheet, which lists all the details.

Thank you Willie.  I would love to pre-ride the new route but I have no free days open.  I will register and mail you my waiver.  For my start I shall take a photo and text it

Looking at the route, the start looks the same with the first control at the gas station on Jamboree.  Next control is the gas station out of Back Bay on PCH.  Then the route goes north to a control in Huntington Beach, looks like a Starbucks.  then it is along the coast to Las Pulgas, the entry to Camp Pendleton.  Here there is an info control.  Then the route returns to Capistrano, follows the same route but does not go up Antonio.  This section will be new to me and looking at the map, there probably be a control.

Looks fun especially a new area.  Just hope I can finish in time.  Happy holidays and I'll see you next year at the finish.  David

Sure, I can do that for you.  Or you can pre-ride it up to one week before and report on the new route:

Hello Willie,

I would like to ride the New Year's Day Brevet which I have ridden every year.  I will have a problem as I have to pick up my brother at the airport that day.  I am hoping that I could start the ride early like at 0430.  Please let me know.  Thank you.  David Nakai RUSA #373

 Hello Mel,

I must have had it good early in the year as things are going south now.  You may not have seen me as I was riding a couple miles, then had to stop to tighten spokes, go another couple miles and keep repeating the process.  I could have stopped earlier at Carson where there is a bike shop but you told of the bike shop in Seal Beach.  I saw Shai and Terri first who were over five miles going the other way, a couple miles back are the others, so I was really behind.

So here comes the New Year's Day Brevet.  Asked Willie if I could start two hours early at 4:30.  He left my Brevet Card out and I'm ready to go.  But my right shoe would not clip in.  Investigating find it is broken.  So that ride is shot.  Drove back to Hawthorne, can make the LAW century.  Switched bikes and find this is the one I used on the Winter Solstice with a bad tire, well it is a brand new hardshell but must be defected.  I get a late start trying to figure what the problem is, went anyway and though it did not feel right, had no problem.  Caught up to the main group at the rock and rode with them much of the ride.  Not sure if I'm going to write a report, got lots to get to including a 75th Anniversary posting.

Not sure if you talked to Nancy as she is sick.  The meeting is suppose to take place Wednesday, I believe it is 6 at Golden China Restaurant.  It's tentative so don't hold me to that.  Maybe I should have not written that till after I have written to Nancy.  Too late I've already typed it.

With no Permanents, I'll probably be seen on LAW rides.  Well not this Sun as there is a San Diego Populaire.  David

David,

Thanks for following up. I was wondering after I heard you shout out on the ride but was too busy trying to stay with the pack to investigate. Managed to stay with them until Seal Beach then I left quickly to ride back alone at a slower pace.

I’m surprised I didn’t see you on the return and you weren’t looking for me as the lead rider either! I did manage to finish first besides stopping for a couple of photos but the rest were right behind me. Kerin reported your text about your mechanical problem so I wasn’t worried but I missed riding back with you the commute is pretty boring but I stopped at Walt Disney Concert hall to transact some business so it wasn’t a complete waste.

Hope to see you on a ride early in 2020!

Mel

Hi David I was wondering what happened to you on the brevet after your nature break.  I kept expecting you to catch up to me but then thought you might have had a flat and I would eventually see you or you would have passed me somehow and I would see you at the end. When I didn’t see you I remembered you were doing the preride to San Diego and had left on that route.

Finally I got worried that you had a crash or got picked up by authorities at the school and were being booked by them and registered as a sex offender. So I am hoping I will read another account of your adventure in the LA Wheelmen Google group. But how about a quick answer of a sentence or two so I can stop worrying. Happy Holidays!

Hello Rod,

Great day of riding.  I am sure you will have a lot of photos from the parade.  Here is a shot I took.  I separated from the group heading up the hill on Las Posas because I wanted to take a photo of them coming up.  I waited and waited, what's taking them so long.  I checked the route sheet on my phone as I did not have one since I've done this ride enough time to know where it goes.  I find the medium turns before the climb, so I assume they all are doing the metric.  With my phone in my pocket, look for something to take a photo of.  It is down on Central, I see this field with the mountain behind to show what a nice day it was.  It is a field of celery which though up a joke, what crop is a worker's favorite?  His salary.  As I am amusing myself, the others have caught up to me and we continued on together.
