Tustin Hangars
Overview
Seventeen stories high, over 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, the hangars were, and still are, two of the largest wooden structures ever built. Designing and building the two structures in 1942, during wartime, on a hyper-accelerated schedule, and with a nearly all-wood design, is what earned the hangars their 1993 listing by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks of the 20th Century.
Hollywood
The hangars have been featured in prominent television shows and films, including JAG, The X Files, Austin Powers, Pearl Harbor, and Star Trek. They have also been featured in several major car commercials.

Current & Future Use
South Hangar
The south hangar (Hangar 2), located near Warner Avenue and Tustin Ranch Road, is currently undergoing an evaluation to determine future use. The south hangar is currently owned by the Department of the Navy and will not be conveyed to the City of Tustin until a determination that environmental remediation on the site is in place and adequately operated by environmental regulators.
The City has allowed certain events/activities to take place in the south hangar on a case-by-case basis. At this time, no rentals of the facility may occur.
North Hangar
The north hangar (Hangar 1), located near Valencia Avenue and Armstrong Road, is currently owned by the Department of the Navy. The building sustained roof damage in October 2013 during a windstorm and was almost completely destroyed by a fire in November 2023. The remaining portions of the building are being demolished.

Subject: One Juan ride that won noone
I was contemplating a song while on the ride yesterday. Quite a few came to mind. A tune composed by Harry Nielson, One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. Solitaire by the Carpenters, when Solitaire's the only game in town. Gilbert O'Sullivan Alone again naturally. But the first that I was singing to is by Eric Carmen, the melodramatic
When I was young
I never needed anyone
Riding the bike was just for fun
Those days are gone
Riding alone
I think of all the friends I've known
When I'm thinking some should have shown
They all stayed home
All by myself
Don't want ride all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't want ride all by myself anymore
Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
With the distant of the tour
Food remains the cure
All by myself
I could be eating donuts off the shelf
Dozens by myself
But that'd be detrimental to my health
When I was young
I had the restraint to eat just one
I'd have just one cinnamon bun
Now they're all gone
It's the cards I've been dealt
With no one to share my wealth
So I pig out what else
Riding all by myself
All by myself
My pants won't fit myself anymore
All by myself
Don't want ride all by myself anymore
Took some photos of the day
1) The start location. Actually this is my first to be here. There's a jet and a space ship for kids to play on. Reason for never visiting this park in the past is past ride description always states this is a flat ride and I used to have this fear of a ride that does not have climbing. It's not I have anything against John. I have ridden this only once after a Populaire then chasing after the club. Now I'd have never caught anyone, well I didn't yesterday.
2) Well maybe they all are starting from the other Orange County start location, Pine Tree Park. Find there's to be a Birthday Party here. The club's a party going bunch.
3) Perhaps I'll catch them at a regular lunch stop. The World Greatest Hamburger did not attract any club members. They're going to have to change name to Knowhabit.
They decorated for the fourth. But was quiet, that Denny's has been taking business. Thinking about it now, greatest does not mean the best. I wanted a root beer float, they did not have root beer.
So I did not follow the route. Well on my own I can do that. As will be in the set.

Subject: Old John River Ride
People don't show, they just hide
But that river keeps flowing
Even if riders ain't going
1) had their famous Apple Pancake. Don't know why, I've been now to my third different Original Pancake House always ordering the same thing knowing full well I will struggle to consume. Downed a pot of tea plus to get it through my esophagus. But it is good if they had a smaller portion. I'm seeing a Man v/s Food where'd you have to eat four of these.
2) you've seen them but I have never taken a photo, assume not a one in the club has. Reason, it's in the dip under Chapman so you'd want momentum to go up. Thus bicyclists are flying through there.
Of course everyone knows this is the Santa Ana River Trail. Been there as long as I know, back when the mural showed more body.
Don't want to be sexist without seeing faces think they are all guys. Which brought up something Reggie commented to me about the club's name. I said ask an officer.
3) some time back Rod wrote about the El Toro base aircraft hangars. One burning down as the last time I saw them there were two. These thing is huge. In the background is Costco warehouse which is dwarfed by the structure. The whole area is being covered with homes, Tustin Legacy. Wonder if they'll destroy this magnificent building in order to occupy more people.
While in Tustin took in the long's Skyline climb and instead of left went up higher on the Cowan Heights loop, something I've heard but never done till now I'm on my own, comes back around so I don't miss the Newport ascent.

Johnny doesn't come of lately
1) while back Rod post photo for Soup to Knotts. Maybe the club is boycotting Orange County rides. OK, the firecracker ride touched the 'other' County but began in LAC. Whatever, here's an early morning shot of the rides at Knotts.
BTW, my intended breakfast was in Buena Parks would not be open for 15 minutes, I would not wait.
BTW 2, had time to circle Disneyland. I could not see a thing behind the covered and protected. I remember when you can see the Matterhorn from the freeway, it was the tallest structure. Well the LA city hall once was the tallest.
Have not been in Disneyland since the defunct People Mover was a new ride.
Saw people wearing the modern Mickeys ears, they are not black. Wonder if Walt is cringing in his grave
2) saw this place. Some may think I say this every morning. Remember when donuts were fifty cents.
3) left this off from the fourth july ride, my lunch. While everyone is having burgers made by five guys, it takes just a single woman to create a family meal. My preplanned destination was not open yet, used one of the best restrooms I've frequent on rides, has a lounge area with music as you wait for your partner to powder, an automatic door, a bicyclist without dismounting rode his bike in
Could gone to a previous stop, the shopping center was not busy, passed Italian place with not a single patron, name has something like homemade or healthy in the name. Regularly avoid anything 'healthy" as it translate to more expensive. Look menu over, then the specials, offered something I'm not familiar with. Asked, it's like a hot pocket, I'm thinking they misspelled calzone, I've been looking for the name, coming empty, it's a pastry crusted mushroom and cheese filled, I like mushrooms and cheese, often purchasing from the local pizzeria their giant with just those ingredients. My complaint it is not enough.
Went back to where the group is, Jacques offers peanut as he is fond of Peanuts, so me is thinking as they are free, could just come in for the multi selection soda dispenser and fill up with goober, bring my own grocery sack. That's nutty
Another annual ride I tend to avoid is this Sunday so it'd be safe to show up. Why would I want to watch something that I do.
Well have to go home before the Missus takes off on her annual visit of her birth place. She won't be seeing me for a month. OK, during Covid she did not see me for two years. One day when I stop working we have to go there together, rather than her family coming here to see the goof she's stuck with.
So maybe try Orange County again following weekend. It begins in LA County. Same location. Could try for that ham burrito missed out due to the holiday. Is the US independence holy.
All by myself
I wrote this all by myself as before
All by myself
I'm finished so won't have to see anymore
Happy bicycling, David

Good morning,
My brother has an early delivery so I am here to open and set up. Meaning I just sit here till either customers or workers show. See Rod is ill, unable to produce a report. I hate this auto correct, hate typing on phone. Put down ill, keeps changing to I'll. Anywhat, been almost a week since the Firecracker ride, just a few notes I can remember.
First need a song, don't know how to copy and paste on this phone but I liked this video. Fourth of July Dave Alvin by Modi.
It's how Americana celebrates. There's even a bike. Don't know where you are but here the day and night is like a war zone with explosives going off shaking buildings and setting off car alarms. Went on continuous from the time I got home, went to bed at 8, woke up at 3, they're still going, it's not patriotic unless you blow off a finger ot burn your house down. I'm thinking the money spent to recreate living in Ukraine, they could just give it to the state so I won't have to pay so much.
Sorry about that.
Who was there at the ride.
Rod, Phil, Jacques, Bill, Gary, Mike, Russ who brought couple of guest, Reggie and George and the only gal in attendance is Chris. Hope I got everyone. My memory is going to the pits.
If you ridden this annual event, you know where it heads. Begins with a loop returning pass the library. Even though it's the same route, even with now GPS, mistakes are made. Well wouldn't be LAW.
Pleasant weather, a flat route out to edge of Huntington Beach then along PCH to lunch which in the past used to be the busy 2nd with a multitude of dining options. The group stops at 5 guys, the only place open that day at the first lunch choice. That Mimi restaurant is all boarded up, probably closed due to it thinking only of itself, Me! Me!
Through busy 2nd to the loop of the Bryant's depending on your age, Anita or Kobe.
Then on to the feature attraction up Signal Hill. Don't know why there is a short route as far as I know everybody goes to get their photo taken
OK. that's it, got to go. Hope this helps Rod. Get well and back on the bike and write
David
Los Angeles Wheelmen VP Report - July 10, 2024
Hello All:
Feeling a little better, but still not over this cold, so here goes anyway. It's summer and having a summer cold makes me blue so here is the obvious song for tonight's theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUBy4ZvpaJc
Last Week: We had a couple of rides last week. First up was our annual 4th of July ride in Long Beach. We had a pretty good turn-out with 11 riders. Phil Whitwoth took this photo at the start:
From the left: Mike Eberts, Russ Brynes (behind Russ is one of two friends he brought along -- Reggie and Charles -- not sure where the other one was) Continuing from the left are Chris Hedberg, Gary Murphy, David Nakai, Biill Faulkner, Jacques Stern and me. It was a pleasant day for riding. We all stuck together and most of us even ate together at 5 Guys. We all did the long route which is proven by the fact that we were all together for the photo at the top of Signal Hill. This photo was taken by a friendly passerby but sent to me by Phil who is on the right. .
On Sunday, the ride was "John's River Ride" starting in Anaheim. I had come down with my cold by then and didn't go. Turns out the only person to go was David Nakai. Here's a shot David took at the start to prove he was there
Since no one else was there, David didn't really ride the club route but made up his own ride. He did ride down the Santa Ana River however which was on the club route. He took this shot of the mural which has been on an underpass on the river for many years. Unfortunately the bottom has been painted over (probably to cover graffiti) but what I liked about the photo was that you can see the reflection of the mural in the water below.
